Sam Smith has re-recorded ‘Stay With Me’ with new lyrics for 10th anniversary

In a recent letter addressed to fans, Sam Smith announced the upcoming 10-year anniversary re-recording of their critically acclaimed hit ‘Stay With Me’. The new version of the single will follow the theme of Smith’s debut album, whereby all tracks are being recorded from scratch and released in honour of the album’s decade-long presence in the music scene.

In reminiscing about the original recording process, Smith noted their initial reaction to Will (Tourist) playing the first three piano chords with immense admiration. The singer continued, “Those chords and this song still stir me in the same way to this day. I’ve never once got sick of singing it”. Smith further explained that the meaning of ‘Stay With Me’ always changes for them, as the words “follow me throughout my life like an old friend”.

In light of their recent disclosure of non-binary and they/them pronouns, Smith has performed the ballad with adjusted lyrics, changing “I’m just a man” to “baby understand”. The remake will also reflect these changes in various sections of the song.

Smith concludes the letter by expressing their gratitude for the continued support of their music. The new version of ‘Stay With Me’ will feature the updated lyric “but I still need love, baby understand”, which Smith deems an essential aspect of the track. The 10-year anniversary edition of Smith’s first album ‘In The Lonely Hour’ is set to be released on August 2, with pre-orders available on digital platforms. Until then, fans can enjoy the original version of ‘Stay With Me’
