An upcoming concert by the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation will be held at the O2 Arena in London on September 13, celebrating Black culture and the 50th birthday of Stephen Lawrence. Set to perform are artists such as D Double E, Ghetts, Nao, Wretch 32, and Mahalia, as well as the Kanneh-Masons. Tickets will be sold starting on July 12 at 10am BST.
Stephen Lawrence was killed in a racially motivated attack in Eltham, southeast London in 1993, and his death has since inspired numerous charity events and activism in his name. The upcoming ‘More Life – Pass The Mic’ concert will feature celebrated music acts and performers, all of whom serve to honour Lawrence and reflect on his life and legacy, as well as spark inspiration for change.
According to Baroness Doreen Lawrence, Stephen’s mother and the founder of the foundation, the concert and the power of music will inspire shifts in perspectives and views of the world around us. The transformative power of music can help put Stephen’s story in a new light, inspiring new conversations and new ways of thinking. The foundation’s CEO, Jessica Neil, sees the event as a way to “demonstrate the power of ordinary people to drive extraordinary change when their talents and aspirations are nurtured”.
This event is emblematic of the foundation’s commitment to promoting culture and community. In 2013, a concert called ‘Unity Concert’ was held at the O2, supporting the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and attended by artists such as Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran, Labrinth, Tinie Tempah, and Rudimental. The upcoming concert is an extension of the same values: honouring the past, highlighting the present, and encouraging change for the future
