Floating Points, the Mercury Prize-nominated musician, has announced the release of a new album titled ‘Cascade’. The album is set to be released on Ninja Tune this September and will see the musician return to his dance music roots after exploring the experimental and classical spheres in recent years. The album features nine tracks, all influenced by local landmarks and institutions in Manchester. The first single from the album, ‘Key103’, is available on streaming services now and is named after the radio station that the musician listened to while growing up in the area.
The album will be accompanied by a European live tour, taking place this autumn, after a series of summer shows that included appearances at the All Points East Festival, We Out Here Festival, Lost Village, and others. Floating Points, real name Sam Shepherd, explains that despite exploring the experimental side of music in the past, he never got a chance to explore the ravey aspect of his music live, as his world tour was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic. This upcoming tour and album will give him the chance to explore this side of his music.
Shepherd created the score for an upcoming anime TV series on Adult Swim, among other ventures, since his last electronic project, the 2019 studio album ‘Crush’. He says that the Main influences behind each track on the new album are local landmarks and institutions in Manchester. Shepherd recalls skipping lunch at school to go and listen to records at Northern Quarter, which was around the corner from his school in Manchester. He says that listening to Autechre, Dilla, and David Morales gave him a parallel education in music to what he was being taught in school.
‘Cascade’ is available now for pre-order on the Ninja Tune website, and ‘Key103’ is available on streaming services. Floating Points will be performing his new material during a European live tour this coming autumn.
