Stealers Wheel co-founder Joe Egan dies aged 77

Joe Egan, a founding member of Stealers Wheel, the Scottish band he co-fronted with the late Gerry Rafferty, has passed away at the age of 77. Martha, Rafferty’s daughter, who manages his official Facebook page, posted a message announcing Egan’s death. She also shared a series of pictures of the two musicians together. Egan was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed away peacefully. Martha described him as a sweet and gentle soul who would always be remembered that way.

Stealers Wheel’s debut single, “Stuck in the Middle With You,” released in 1973, was their most famous song. The song reached No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 6 on the US Billboard Hot 100. Their initial chart success was increased after decades when it featured in a decisive scene in Quentin Tarantino’s 1992 film “Reservoir Dogs.” Reflecting on how the band’s song got featured in the film, the director had explained that he had asked the actors who were auditioning for the torture scene to choose any song they wanted, but “almost everyone came in with ‘Stuck in the Middle With You’,” and they said they “tried to come up with something else, but that’s the one.”

The folk rock band’s career lasted until 1975 when they disbanded, and both Egan and Raffety pursued solo ventures. In 1979, Egan released his debut album, “Out of Nowhere,” and followed it up with “Map” in 1981.
