The recent trailer for the second series of the Game of Thrones prequel, House of the Dragon, showed Aegon II and Rhaenyra Targaryen battling for the Iron Throne, with the former riding dragon Sunfyre. While it was an exciting battle, it could have been disastrous for Aegon. In the episode “A Dance of Dragons”, viewers were left wondering whether or not Aegon had died. At the end of the episode, Cole woke up to find Sunfyre’s dead body and saw Aegon’s prone form on the ground nearby.
In the episode, Aegon took a direct hit from the fire breath of Vhagar and fell a great height before hitting the ground with considerable force. Cole found Aegon with Aemond standing over him with his blade drawn, suggesting that Aegon was alive but badly injured. There has even been speculation that Aemond may have been responsible for his brother’s death. However, in the Fire & Blood book by George R.R. Martin, on which House of the Dragon is based, Aegon survives.
In the book, Aegon is injured but not by Aemond and Vhagar. Instead, he and Sunfyre are hurt by Rhaenys and dragon Meleys. While Aegon survives in the book, he suffers from severe injuries, including severe burns to over half of his body and several broken bones. It takes him over a year to recover. It remains to be seen whether or not House of the Dragon will follow the book or veer away from it.
Despite the ambiguity surrounding Aegon’s fate, House of the Dragon has been well-received by both fans and critics. Many have praised the show’s exciting plot, rich characters, and impressive visuals. Some have even said that it’s better than the original Game of Thrones series. While the fate of Aegon may be uncertain, one thing is clear: House of the Dragon is a show worth watching
