Sir Keir Starmer, the first Labour prime minister in 14 years, received a warm welcome from Northern Ireland’s party leaders during his official visit to Stormont. He had constructive and positive meetings with executive and opposition representatives, as well as the first and deputy first ministers. Sir Keir was joined by the new Northern Ireland Secretary Hilary Benn and his chief of staff Sue Gray.

Sir Keir emphasised a “reset” in relationships between his government and the executive, which his government has a mandate for change and stability in Northern Ireland and a different way of doing politics. Sinn Féin described their meeting with the prime minister as friendly and productive, highlighting the difference between dealing with the new Labour government and the former Conservative government. The issue of funding for the redevelopment of Casement Park stadium in west Belfast was also discussed, with the expectation of progress in the near future.

The Democratic Unionist Party leader expressed confidence that his party would have a good relationship with the new prime minister, describing the meeting as “very productive.” Alliance leader Naomi Long also had a constructive and positive discussion with Sir Keir, discussing the importance of fiscal and political reform for increased stability in Northern Ireland and renewed east-west relations.

The Ulster Unionist Party leader called for more funding for public services, particularly the health service, during his meeting with the prime minister and described it as very positive. The Social Democratic and Labour Party leader felt a collective sigh of relief at the end of the Conservative government, expressing confidence in Sir Keir’s understanding of key issues such as Casement Park and the Legacy Act.

During his visit, Sir Keir also addressed concerns about the redevelopment of Casement Park and urged people to bear with him while he ploughs through the issues, stating that it has to be built
