New UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy wants to reset ties with EU

David Lammy, the new Foreign Secretary of the UK, embarked on a brief tour to Germany, Poland, and Sweden. This trip is viewed as an effort to form new perceptions about the UK’s foreign policy. It was also to reflect a new administration, one that is robust and willing to pursue goodwill with vital partners. This tour was a quick response to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where the UK is playing its part in supporting Kyiv’s military efforts to combat separatist movements.

The purpose of this tour was to showcase the UK’s commitment to Ukraine, where all three countries (Germany, Poland, and Sweden) are major players in sustaining the war efforts. The trip was also aimed at strengthening bilateral relationships with key European partners and fellow NATO members. Lammy mentioned that “I want to reset both our bilateral relationship and our relationship with the European Union.” He added that the new spirit of cooperation would be displayed during the next meeting of the European Political Community to be held on 18 July at Blenheim Palace.

It is a tricky moment for the UK to strengthen its relationships, with France turning right and the US possibly returning the unpredictable Trump to power. During the tour, Lammy addressed several concerns regarding Iran’s drones in Ukraine, North Korea’s shells on European soil, and a partnership with Russia that brokering deal across authoritarian states.
