Metal fans were pleasantly surprised to see James Hetfield and Rob Halford enjoying a festival set by Turnstile recently. The metal icons were spotted watching the show from sidestage at Norway’s Tons Of Rock Festival, where Metallica headlined on June 26 and Judas Priest on June 28. Other artists such as Tool, Nova Twins, and Parkway Drive also performed at the festival.

Both Hetfield and Halford have been supporters of new metal acts, including Ghost and Sleep Token. Highlighting their appreciation for emerging artists, Hetfield’s footage of watching Judas Priest at Power Trip festival went viral last year, and now the pair have been spotted enjoying Turnstile’s set, much to fans’ delight.

In an interview with NME, Turnstile frontman Brendan Yates discussed playing festivals, saying, “you’re always going to do exactly what you do and be exactly who you are.” Speaking about the opportunities they’ve been given to perform for new crowds, Yates said, “playing music […] it’s always an exciting opportunity, especially to never feel like you’re doing the same thing [and] constantly growing.” Turnstile is currently touring Asia in 2024, along with other artists.

Metallica and Judas Priest remain renowned names in the metal world, but it’s nice to see them enjoying and supporting new talent. Their enthusiastic reactions to the performance by Turnstile is a testament to the band’s rising popularity, and hopefully, it will help introduce more fans to their music
