Mark Vessey, a British artist, has worked with legendary house music pioneer Carl Cox on a new photography project. The collaboration features photographs of Cox’s favourite vinyl records from his 150,000 collection that has been amassed by both him and his late father from all around the world, and the artwork is titled ‘Carl’. Vessey announced the partnership on Instagram that documents his travels to Australia to Carl’s inimitable studio where he got to experience his passion and love for music and medicine.
The art collection is on exhibit at Brighton’s Enter Gallery and features records personally selected by Cox with each album he picked having a story behind it. Cox describes his collection as the “best of the best” and says that “every single one of these records are not promos, I literally went to the record store and stood there and went through the music”. The vinyl collection that spans across multiple genres will be available for purchase at the exhibition.
Previous Collections’ series artist, Vessey has also worked with artists like Fatboy Slim and Simon Dunmore. Working alongside Vessey, Cox discussed how watching Mark work made him understand the privilege and responsibility he has when sharing his love of music with the dancefloor. Vessey expressed gratitude towards Cox for having trusted him to curate the vinyl collection.
Cox has been playing house and techno music for the last 40 years and has entrenched himself in the music scene. The DJ and producer has been named the master of Ibiza, and his music has been heard all around the world. He recently collaborated with Paul Oakenfold on their first-ever collab, ‘Concentrate’, expressing that they had an “absolute blast” working together.
Those interested in seeing the artwork can purchase tickets on eventbrite.co.uk; the exhibition runs from July 20th at Brighton’s Enter Gallery
