At Glastonbury 2024, NewDad spoke with NME about their recent achievements and plans for the future. Vocalist and guitarist Julie Dawson and bassist Cara Joshi caught up with us backstage after performing at Woodsies on Sunday. This appearance at Glastonbury followed a notable few months for the Galway band, who became NME cover stars ahead of the January release of their debut album ‘Madra’.
In May, the band embarked on a tour with 5 Seconds of Summer frontman Luke Hemmings to support the release of his second LP ‘Boy’. Joshi noted that the experience both had personal significance and exposed the band to a new audience, including teenagers who may have discovered shoegaze music for the first time. “Usually, when you’re a support band, people don’t pay too much attention to you,” Dawson added. “But these fans were showing up so early and seemed so excited by our music. They were really keen to see us and made such an effort.”
NewDad performed a cover of The Cure’s ‘Just Like Heaven’ on stage at Woodsies, which has become a staple of their live set and recently caught the attention of Robert Smith on Twitter. The band also revealed their plans for the rest of 2024, including their first live shows in Japan in October and starting work on their second full-length album.
Dawson said, “We’ve been doing a lot of writing. I don’t think we’ve really figured out where we’re going but we have a lot of great songs that we’re just trying to nail down. We are so busy with live shows at the moment but hopefully after Christmas we will be able to get back into the studio. We are writing some really good tunes. I am so, so excited for the next step.” Keep an eye on NME for the latest Glastonbury 2024 news, reviews, interviews, photos, rumors, and more
