Noel Gallagher has shared his unexpected appreciation for Irish rap trio Kneecap during this year’s Glastonbury festival. Speaking to comedian Matt Morgan on his podcast, the musician admitted that he was amazed by the group’s performance, which included a song titled “Get Your Brits Out.” He said, “Being of Irish heritage, I found that quite funny and they were really, really good … I couldn’t believe how enjoyable it was.” The band has been making waves with their unique strain of music, backed by politically charged lyrics, which have resonated with audiences at home and abroad.
At the festival, Kneecap played two sets and conducted a Q&A session on their upcoming self-titled biopic. The trailer for the movie, which features Hollywood star Michael Fassbender, was aired at Glastonbury’s Pilton Palace cinema tent. The band has continued to gain recognition from notable figures within the industry: Trainspotting author, Irvine Welsh, recently described the movie as “absolutely fucking phenomenal.”
Despite receiving some initial skepticism regarding their foray into acting, the rap trio has proven doubters wrong. They remarked that the film has been similarly well received across cultural barriers, adding, “Obviously, we’re a music band, we’re doing acting jobs that we’d never done before…” Kneecap’s movie will be released in the US on August 2, with a UK and Ireland release scheduled for August 23. The band will also be embarking on a tour that will take them through the UK, Europe and North America for the remainder of 2022.
For Gallagher, the weekend at Glastonbury was an opportunity to take in the eclectic range of talent on display, from techno to rap. He praised the festival’s legendary atmosphere, saying, “You really feel like it’s everybody there together, just for that one reason, which is to have a fucking great time.” With acts like Kneecap breaking new ground, it’s clear that the festival will continue to inspire generations of musicians and fans alike.
