The Australian children’s animated television series, Bluey, premiered in 2018 on ABC Kids. Created and written by Joe Brumm, the show follows the adventures of Bluey, an anthropomorphic Blue Heeler puppy, and her family. The series has been broadcast for three seasons and has garnered popularity all over the world and is now available on Disney+.
The theme tune of the show has become a topic of discussion and is incredibly popular amongst its young audience. Apart from this, the series has also produced two soundtracks. The first one, ‘Bluey: The Soundtrack,’ was released in early 2021 alongside one of the episodes of the show’s first season. Following its success, ‘Bluey: Dance Mode!’ was released in 2023. Both soundtracks were successful in Australia, with the first one reaching the top of the ARIA Albums Chart in February 2021. In the same year, it won the Best Children’s Album at the 2021 ARIA Music Awards.
The show’s theme tune and all other music accompanying the series were composed and written by Joff Bush, a Brisbane-based musician. Although long-time friends with executive producer Daley Pearson and previous classmates, Bush initially hesitated to accept the offer to score the tune for the series created explicitly for pre-schoolers. However, after watching a few episodes, he found the show to be emotional and decided to take the job.
Bush shared his process of composing music for the series in an interview, saying that working on the show keeps him excited as they get to experiment with a variety of music types and novel ideas for every episode. His work on specific episodes ‘Cricket’ and ‘Dance Mode’ won the Music for Screen Award and the Children’s Music Award at the Queensland Music Awards in 2021
