Martin Mull, the well-known actor and comedian who is famous for his roles in television sitcoms, has passed away at the age of 80. Mull’s best-known work includes shows such as Arrested Development, Roseanne, and Sabrina The Teenage Witch. He died on June 27th, according to an Instagram post written by his daughter, Maggie Mull. She mentioned that her father fought a long illness before passing away and that he would always be remembered as an exceptional person.
Martin’s initial break came when he played Garth Gimble on the satirical soap opera spoof Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. He also acted in two spinoff shows, including Fernwood 2 Nights. Before he earned fame as an actor, he was a songwriter and musical comedian who opened shows for Bruce Springsteen and Frank Zappa in the ’70s. Later on, Mull acted in the comedy classic Clue as Colonel Mustard and became the voice actor for Red Roof Inn commercials.
In the ’90s, Martin appeared in popular shows such as Roseanne, in which he played the titular character’s boss, Leon Carp. He later went on to act in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, where he played Principal Willard Kraft. He also gained critical acclaim for playing the character Gene Parmesan, the private detective, and master of disguise in Arrested Development, a role that had become iconic.
Born in Chicago, Martin Mull studied painting and graduated in 1965 from the Rhode Island School of Design. He leaves behind his wife, Wendy Haas, and daughter Maggie. Several social media users and famous personalities paid tribute to him, including The Simpsons’ Harry Shearer and Eric Idle, who portrayed Mull as a “true artist in every sense of the word.
