Spanish police are investigating DJ and producer Diplo for allegedly hosting an illegal rave in a protected area in Ibiza. According to reports, the unlicensed event took place in June at the Cala d’Hort viewpoint overlooking the es Vedra island, which is an EU-protected site in Ibiza. The event could result in fines of up to €300,000 for Diplo and other organizers involved in the illegal event.
Diplo was accused of encouraging fans to attend the surprise party through social media posts, which has led to an investigation by local authorities, including the Sant Josep City Council. Non-profit nightlife organization Ocio de Ibiza has already expressed its displeasure over events like this, saying that such activities endanger the integrity of the people attending and damage the leisure sector on the island.
The reaction from the Sant Josep City Council was even stronger, saying that the Cala d’Hort area is a “vulnerable area” where illegal activities create risks including the risk of fires, noise pollution, and waste disposal issues. The council also warned that the area is subject to a limited framework of environmental protection measures, including the European Union’s Natura 2000 Network.
