Rough Trade US has complied a list of the 31 most important, beloved, and influential albums of the year so far. These albums are in no particular order and include a wide range of genres. Here are some of the highlights from the list.
Kamasi Washington’s “Fearless Movement” features contributions from George Clinton, AndrĂ© 3000, and Washington’s toddler daughter. The virtuosic celebration of Black American music is richly varied.
Waxahatchee still delivers magic in the form of “Tigers Blood.” The country-tinged album is filled with anthemic earworms that evoke a range of emotions.
Charli XCX’s “brat” is arguably her best work yet, and is guaranteed to get you on the dancefloor for the best night of your life.
Yaya Bey’s “Ten Fold” is an interesting blend of catchy dancefloor bangers, R&B, soulful odes, and homespun funk. The New Yorker’s fifth studio album is simply unmissable.
Adrianne Lenker’s “Bright Future” showcases good old-fashioned song craftsmanship that eloquently captures the often confusing and contradicting feelings when truly in love.
DIIV’s “Frog in Boiling Water” is a masterful example of political shoegaze that is too special to ignore.
The Last Dinner Party’s “Prelude To Ecstasy” debut album is a little bit Kate Bush, a little bit BCNR, a little bit Weyes Blood, and a little bit of all your favorite indie bands. The all-female London band is undoubtedly a promising act.
The list cannot be concluded without a mention of Cloud Nothings. The Ohio-based indie rock band’s album “Final Summer” is full of gargantuan hooks that are guaranteed to make you feel alive.
In conclusion, these albums have left their mark in the first half of the year and we can’t wait to see what other great music is in store for the remainder of 2024
