During her Glastonbury 2024 performance, Jessie Ware surprised fans by bringing out Romy from The xx to debut their new song ‘Lift You Up’. The track features uplifting dance-piano riffs and the lyrics “I’m gonna lift you up inside this feeling / I’m gonna give you something to believe in”. “I have seen her and her band grow up and I have seen her smash it, I am so proud to call her my friend and we have been waiting to make a tune together”, Ware said of Romy when introducing her to the stage.
This wasn’t Ware’s first rodeo, however, as she has attended the festival in the past as a punter and even previously performed as a backing singer for the festival’s other performers. “I was so excited, sneaking backstage to meet Beth Ditto and being a punter and getting really in the thick of it,” she recalled. During this year’s performance, Ware led the crowd in a choreographed dance routine to her 2023 track ‘Beautiful People’ and even covered Cher’s ‘Believe’. Ware’s performance featured a nightclub theme referred to as ‘Club Pearl’, where she referred to herself as ‘Mother of Pearl’ and interacted with the audience.
This wasn’t Romy’s first surprise appearance of the festival, however, as she also joined Charli XCX’s DJ set on Friday night. Fans were thrilled to see the two talented artists collaborating and raved about the performance on Twitter.
