York crash: One man dead and five injured in Rufforth collision

A fatal crash between a double decker bus and a Tesla car has resulted in one fatality and five people injured in York. The emergency services were called to Wetherby Road near Rufforth on Saturday at 09:22 BST. A 31 year old male passenger in the Tesla died at the scene whilst the driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Three other passengers in the Tesla and the bus driver were treated for minor injuries. The road was reopened almost eight hours later and anyone with information about the crash, or who has dashcam footage, is asked to contact the police.

The police revealed that the deceased person was from the Newcastle area and the Tesla driver is from Teesside. Two air ambulances were called along with other ambulances and a Hazardous Area Response Team to deal with the incident while the police were on the scene. There was no indication as to how the crash occurred and police are investigating the issue.

This comes after Yorkshire experienced a similar fatal car crash on the A165 near Scarbrough last month that killed three people travelling in a car that was in collision with a double decker bus. Fatal road accidents have decreased significantly due to a reduction in traffic caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. The total number of deaths resulting from road accidents decreased by 2% in 2020, the lowest number in this century.

Despite the decrease in number of accidents due to Covid-19, drivers are still advised to maintain good driving habits and be alert and attentive when on the road. The advice, especially in light of the fatalities that occurred in Yorkshire and Scarborough in recent weeks, emphasises the importance of caution and compliance with traffic rules and regulations
