The driver who caused a fatal crash at The Study Preparatory School in Wimbledon in which two eight-year-old girls died will not face criminal charges, according to the Metropolitan Police. Nuria Sajjad and Selena Lau were killed when a Land Rover crashed into an end-of-term tea party on 6 July 2023. Sixteen people were injured. The driver suffered an epileptic seizure at the wheel. Jaswant Narwal of the Crown Prosecution Service said there was “no evidence” that the driver had suffered a previous seizure, and no evidence of a previously diagnosed medical condition.

The parents of the girls involved said: “So many lives were irreparably shattered” on the day of the crash, and questioned the thoroughness of the investigation. The driver, Claire Freemantle, said she had no recollection of the event and expressed “deepest sorrow”.

The decision not to charge the driver followed consideration of a lengthy and detailed police investigation, said Narwal. The families of the girls known as Sajjad Butt, Smera Chohan, Franky Lau, and Jessie Deng said that friends, family members, neighbours, and teachers would never “lead ‘normal’ lives again”, and that some people would never experience joy again
