The world may be seeing the arrival of the much-awaited sequel to Dreamwork’s Shrek franchise as early as next year, according to Eddie Murphy. The actor, who voices Donkey in the animated films, confirmed during an interview with Collider that a new movie is already in production. While he did not give specific details, he stated that he recorded the first act and that the movie would come out in the near future.
Murphy also revealed that there was going to be a spinoff movie centered around his character, Donkey, alongside Shrek 5. The actor stated that he would be recording for both movies at different times, with Donkey’s spinoff due to come out before Shrek 5. The fifth installment, which Universal was reportedly considering back in 2023, is said to have the original cast, including Murphy, Mike Myers, and Cameron Diaz.
The new Shrek movie comes over a decade since the last film’s release, making it one of the most awaited sequels of all time. The franchise has been massively successful, with the four previous films grossing more than a billion dollars worldwide. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, released in 2022, was the last movie to come out of the Shrek universe.
Meanwhile, Murphy is also returning to reprise his iconic Axel Foley role in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which will come out on Netflix in July 2024. As fans take in this news that Shrek 5 could arrive sooner than they expect, they will undoubtedly keep an ear out for more information about the series’ future
