A man has been seriously injured following a house explosion in County Durham, which prompted nearby residents to evacuate their homes as a precaution. The emergency services were alerted at roughly 01:30 BST to respond to the incident at Coronation Terrace in Willington. Police have since cordoned off the affected property as the investigation into the explosion begins. The injured man has been transported to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle to be treated.
It is currently advised that people avoid the area while Durham Constabulary, Durham County Council, Northern Gas Networks, and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service evaluate the scene. The service said an investigation into the explosion would take place “in due course”. Group manager Chris Williams added: “Our crews will remain in the area today….to assess the site and ensure it is structurally safe.”
