Jay Slater: Brit still missing in Tenerife after eight-day search

British teenager Jay Slater has gone missing on the Spanish island of Tenerife. The 19-year-old disappeared last Monday while on holiday and has not been heard from since calling one of his friends – telling her he was lost, his phone was running out of battery and he needed water. Slater had earlier left the group he was on holiday with in the tourist hotspot of Playa de las Americas, on the south of the island. After leaving the NRG music festival at Papagayo night club, the apprentice bricklayer got in a car with two men he had met to drive to the rural north-west of the island. Sunday saw specialist dog teams searching the terrain around Rural de Teno National Park – Slater’s last known location – and police focusing their efforts on some small outbuildings in a village near to where his phone was last traced.

Efforts have been hampered by challenging terrain and the rural remoteness of the national park. Deep ravines and huge daunting mountains make it a difficult place for the Spanish search teams to navigate. Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, said: “We just need you home”. A fundraising page set up by one of his friends has gathered more than £30,000 worth of donations. Lancashire Police has offered to assist Spanish police searching for him, but were told their counterparts in Tenerife felt they had enough resources
