Manchester Airport: Grounded flights rearranged after power cut

Manchester Airport is still experiencing issues following a power cut on Sunday. The airport has apologised for the disruption which saw over 90,000 passengers affected when the outage caused problems with security and baggage screening. Airlines are now rearranging the hundreds of flights that were grounded, with some travellers facing further delays.

Outbound flights were grounded early on Sunday and scheduled arrivals were diverted to other UK airports. By lunchtime on Sunday, 66 outbound flights (25% of all departures) and 50 inbound journeys (18% of all arrivals) had been cancelled. Flights resumed around 7.30 pm BST. Kelvn Knaver from St Helens, due to fly to Amsterdam with EasyJet, described the airport as a “mess” adding “there’s such a backlog that it’s going to take forever to clear”.

EasyJet, which saw the largest number of cancellations, has said the delays were “out of its control”, with the company doing “everything possible to minimise the impact of the disruption”. Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, and Houston’s offer from Texas, have all experienced issues. Chris Woodroofe, the managing director of Manchester Airport, explained that the disruption was caused by a “fault” with a cable at the airport, which sent a surge of power across the electrical network.

Manchester Airport has said all flights scheduled for Monday are expected to run as normal. However, airlines are in touch with travellers whose flights were cancelled on Sunday, and some flights may still be delayed or disrupted as airlines rearrange their schedules.
