The UK’s Conservative Party is reportedly embroiled in a gambling scandal involving at least four members, including their chief data officer Nick Mason. According to the Sunday Times, Mason allegedly placed dozens of bets on the date of the last UK general election, which could have resulted in the winnings of thousands of pounds. He denies any wrongdoing, and the party is refusing to comment on any of the Gambling Commission investigations. Two other Conservative election candidates have also confirmed they are under investigation by the Commission for gambling. One of these candidates is Laura Saunders, who has worked for the party since 2015, while the other is Craig Williams, a former MP who is standing again in the upcoming election.
The alleged gambling took place before the dates were announced, leading to suspicion that those involved had insider information. When asked, Williams refused to confirm or deny the use of such information. Although the CC doesn’t confirm the identities of those being investigated, both Labour and the Liberal Democrats have called for the suspension of those involved. Liberal Democrat deputy leader Daisy Cooper has called for an inquiry into the scandal.
Meanwhile, there has also been an arrest of a police officer working in close protection for the Prime Minister. The officer in question has been accused of placing unauthorised bets on the election date and has been suspended and arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office by the Metropolitan Police. The force was alerted to the issue by the Gambling Commission and investigations are ongoing
