Liverpool’s St George’s Hall is hosting a series of events this summer to celebrate its 170th anniversary. The Grade I-listed building is launching an event series named “It’s Yours!”. The program pays homage to the cultural heritage of Liverpool and features a range of music and comedy performances, as well as new commissions. It also blends the old and new, offering a cultural experience that echoes famous periods of the past two centuries.
The venue is calling its anniversary celebrations “SGH170”. Ticket sales for all shows are set to begin on 21 June 2024 at 9 am and can be booked on the venue’s website. The stunning event lineup includes the following performances: Enlightenment, rock n roll circus, comedy in the concert room, the narrative and the wombat jazz festival. The event series offers a diverse range of shows to celebrate the milestone anniversary, accommodating the various tastes of visitors.
Opened in 1854, the neo-classical building has a rich heritage and has hosted many iconic moments in Liverpool’s history, including popstar will.i.am playing impromptu music on the Henry Willis Organ. St George’s Hall has witnessed political and social events such as the Hillsborough Inquest announcement in 2016 and acted as the vigil site after the murder of John Lennon. In addition, it has served as the setting of blockbuster hits such as Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and The Batman.
The building underwent a £23m renovation in 2007 and now plays host to a range of cultural events, including weddings. Director of Culture Liverpool, Claire McColgan, said that Liverpool residents were lucky to have such a beautiful venue. She added that the anniversary celebrations would give visitors an opportunity to reflect on the building’s history while enjoying a range of shows that showcase its grandeur and importance. Jazz singer and curator Ni Maxine also welcomed the creation of the Wombat Jazz Festival, which is set to showcase the best jazz artists in the region
