Rob Burrow, the former Leeds Rhinos and England rugby league star who died of motor neurone disease (MND) at the age of 41, left a series of private messages for his children to be played at special moments in their lives, according to his wife. Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Lindsey Burrow said she was incredibly proud of her husband and the legacy he had left behind as an MND campaigner. Burrow’s final public message, recorded using an eye-tracking communication device, was broadcast as part of the documentary There’s Only One Rob Burrow.

Following his death, Burrow received messages of support from around the world, including a “heartfelt” note from Prince William, who described the rugby league player as a “legend” with “a huge heart”. Burrow and his former teammate Kevin Sinfield were both awarded CBEs in the 2024 New Year Honours for their fundraising efforts on behalf of MND charities. The pair helped raise more than £15m ($20m) since Burrow’s diagnosis.

Rhinos player wear a specially-designed shirt in a sell-out match at Headingley against Leigh Leopards to remember Burrow and to raise funds for the Rob Burrow Centre for MND. For every replica shirt purchased by fans, a £10 donation will be made to the Leeds Hospitals Charity appeal.

Burrow, who retired from playing rugby league in 2017, had a 17-year career with the Rhinos, England and Great Britain, making more than 400 appearances and winning numerous championships and Cups. His death in June 2021 prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from fans and fellow players alike
