Mexican artist Peso Pluma has shaken up the industry with his success and mainstreaming of corridos tumbados. The artist is criticized for the historical relationship of narco culture and corridos. However, Peso Pluma used his performance at Coachella to acknowledge the history of corridos. He unveiled his fourth album, “Éxodo.” The album shows Peso Pluma’s growth while he explores other genres such as hip-hop and reggaeton. Corridos remain an integral part of the album, being fiery and ‘bélico.’
The collab with Esteban Plazola on “Hollywood” glorifies the life of an artist. The album has love songs too, with “Reloj” touching on Peso Pluma’s breakup with Argentine singer Nicki Nicole. The second part of “Éxodo” focuses on the crossover with hip-hop. “Put Em in the Fridge” with Cardi B showcases the collision of horns and the requinto guitar with bass-heavy trap beats. “Gimme a Second” with Rich the Kid has a fully trap sound, which Peso Pluma has yet to perfect.
Peso Pluma delves into reggaeton, such as his collaboration with Brazilian pop star Anitta in “Bellakeo” and “Tommy & Pamela” featuring Kenia Os. The album highlights Peso Pluma’s vision of música Mexicana while proving he’s a global pop star.
The album, through its major experimentation, shows Peso Pluma’s uncompromising spirit. The album is set for release on June 20, 2024, under the record label Double P Records
