West Midlands Police are continuing investigations into the death of a seven-month-old baby girl who was attacked by the family’s pet dog. The incident took place on Sunday in Coventry, although the breed of the dog has not yet been confirmed by the police. The animal had no history of violence and was not a dangerous breed. It was destroyed humanely by police following the attack.
Emergency services were called to the property on Shorncliffe Road at around 3 pm on Sunday after the dog attacked the girl, leaving her with serious injuries. She was treated on the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital, where she passed away shortly afterward. The attack occurred within the family’s home.
The police have yet to issue an official update on the case, but have expressed sympathy for the family’s loss, saying that their thoughts are with them at this “devastating time.” The investigation into the circumstances of the attack is ongoing.
As yet, the police have not confirmed if the dog was a banned breed. Under the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991, it is illegal in the UK to own or breed certain types of dogs, such as the pit bull terrier, Japanese Tosa, and Dogo Argentino, amongst others, without a specific exemption from the courts
