When Slipknot first burst onto the music scene in 1995, they did so with a logo that has become iconic in the years since. A tribal ‘S’ design, it was created by Joey Jordison, the band’s original drummer who sadly passed away earlier this year. Now, his family has shared an image of the very first design, which Jordison drew on a wooden desk. The post included a message of thanks to Slipknot fans, who “meant the world” to Jordison.
Speaking to Kerrang! in 2017, Jordison explained that he had sketches, logos, and designs for nearly every band he had been in. The Slipknot logo and tribal ‘S’ were among them, and it was Jordison who drew them both. He even recounted the story behind the iconic logo, explaining that he drew it on his dad’s old desk in the house where he grew up using only pen and ink. “I took it to band practice and they loved it. The next thing you know, almost half of the band got it tattooed,” he added.
Jordison’s contribution to Slipknot doesn’t stop there, as he also played a key role in the band’s name. While it wasn’t solely his idea, Jordison was a part of the “band discussion” that led to the name “Slipknot”. In an interview with Loudwire in 2017, he recalled how he was “spitballing in a band meeting” and suggested the name.
Jordison’s legacy will always be intertwined with Slipknot, and the band continues to evolve even as they mourn his loss. In recent news, their new member, known only as ‘Samples’, spoke for the first time in an interview with NME. As the band prepares for what’s next, the logo that Jordison created more than 25 years ago remains an integral part of their identity and a testament to his talent and creativity
