The trial of a man accused of murder or manslaughter of another man has begun in Sheffield. Hassan Jhangur, 24, allegedly killed Chris Marriott, 46, in late December 2019. The incident was allegedly sparked by an ongoing feud between two families after a wedding in the area, which was said to have caused violent confrontations. Jhangur denies all charges, including murder, which his father Mohammed Jhangur, 56, has been accused of impeding.
The incident occurred in Burngreave in Sheffield when Mr Marriott was attempting to help a woman who he had found motionless in the street. The prosecution’s case says that Jhangur hit bystanders with his car, including Mr Marriott. Jhangur also faces charges of attempted murder and gouging another man’s eye.
The prosecution’s opening statement yesterday gave the jury a narrative of events that led up to the attack and claimed that a feud had developed between the two families due to a wedding that sparked violent confrontations. An altercation outside the Khan family’s home later that day led to the arrest of Jhangur. Part of the defence’s argument appears to be that Jhangur’s car was out of control, as he only admitted to dangerous driving when arraigned.
Alison Norris, a midwife, who was out for a walk with her family when the incident happened, also gave evidence yesterday. She said that after trying to help a woman who had fallen and was lying in the road, she felt a force pushing past her. She later realised that she was hit by Jhangur’s car. Norris and others who had been on the scene also reported that Jhangur got out of his car armed with a knife and stabbed one of the wedding guests.
The defense has denied that Jhangur intended to harm anyone, claiming that his epilepsy impacted his driving that day. The trial continues
