Colin-Gingell Good, known as DJ Pressplay, installed written signs on his booth at the Coda nightclub in Colchester to dissuade those who don’t accept that he can’t always play their favourite tracks. In a BBC interview, he said: “A lot of people are great, they’ll come up and ask for a song that fits the night, but other people… they’re very demanding and don’t take no for an answer.”
To remind patrons to respect his music selections, the list by DJ Pressplay jokes that Kings of Leon’s “Sex on Fire” will come with a £250 ($342) fee and Oasis’ “Wonderwall” will cost £500 ($684) to play. The steepest fine on the list is £1,000 ($1,369) for “Mr Brightside” by The Killers. The list also lists fees for “birthday requests”, “songs that do not fit the night”, “insisting you know better than the DJ”, and “having your song played because you are leaving”.
DJ Pressplay stated, “When I’m, for example, playing a disco and soul night — you won’t hear anything metal or something by the Foo Fighters, it just doesn’t fit.” The tongue-in-cheek warning signs have apparently worked, with no club-goers yet asking to hear “Mr Brightside” since the introduction of the fees
