Spanish film-maker Patricia Franquesa found herself in a vulnerable position when hackers informed her that they would leak her nude photos unless she paid them ransom money after they stole her laptop from a cafe in Madrid in 2019. Instead of giving in to their demands, the director turned the cameras on herself to document her ordeal and take control of the situation. The result is My Sextortion Diary, a film that Franquesa made to protect herself, create distance from the trauma, and also to separate herself into two distinct personas, “Pati” and “Pati the character and director”.
The digital diary film premiered at the Sheffield Documentary Festival and has since screened at several festivals where it has been well received. Franquesa, who felt that she had to raise awareness about events that have become an unfortunate norm for a generation that grew up with the internet, noted that the purpose of the film was to be a “digital diary”.
