Billy Corgan opens up about friendship with Sinéad O’Connor: “Such an incredible talent”

In a recent interview with the Irish Times, Billy Corgan discussed his friendship with the late singer Sinéad O’Connor, whom he described as “such an incredible talent.” O’Connor passed away in July of last year at the age of 56. Corgan shared that the singer lived with his mutual friend and drummer, Matt Walker, in Chicago, and he got to know her better over Sunday dinners at Walker’s house.

Corgan remembered O’Connor as “very, very honest. I mean, almost to a fault.” He continued, “Such a beautiful woman, such an incredible talent – just in awe of her talent.” Despite her struggles, he noted that O’Connor’s gift for singing had a direct line to her heart.

The Smashing Pumpkins frontman also recalled a time in May of 2016 when O’Connor had gone missing for several hours. He said, “My friends are calling me, freaking out, because they don’t know what to do … It was hard to watch, because, you know, her struggles were real.” Corgan praised the outpouring of love and respect for O’Connor after her passing, but also noted that she may not have received enough attention and support during her life.

Coroners confirmed earlier this year that O’Connor died of natural causes. Corgan was one of many who wrote tributes to the artist after her death, describing her as fiercely honest, sweet, and funny. Other artists, such as Garbage and Michael Stipe from REM, also shared their grief on social media.

Overall, Corgan’s memories of O’Connor showcase the deep impact that artists can have on each other’s lives and the importance of recognizing their gifts during their lifetime
