Police in Fintona, County Tyrone have arrested a 28-year-old man after he drove his car towards police officers during a parade on the Tattymoyle Road. The incident occurred on Saturday evening when the driver of a black BMW car disobeyed instructions from police and deliberately swerved towards officers. A police officer was forced to jump out of the way of the car while another officer deployed a stinger device to puncture its tyres. The car was later found abandoned a short distance away. A man matching the description of the driver was arrested by police officers.
The PSNI Air Support Unit provided support to officers on the ground and found the man hiding in a hedge. The suspect was arrested on a number of charges, including attempting to cause grievous bodily injury by dangerous driving, failure to stop for police, driving with excess alcohol in breath, and having no driving license. The individual has been taken into custody.
A 29-year-old woman was also arrested in connection with the incident. She is suspected of assaulting police and resisting police. A report will be submitted to the Public Prosecution Service. Ch Insp Beverlie Reid from the PSNI expressed relief that none of the police officers were injured in the attack, stating that “Police officers do not deserve to be targeted in this manner for simply doing their job.”
This is not the first of such incidents in the area, and the PSNI has indicated that they will take strong action against anyone who attacks police officers. The PSNI has also warned that any parade, gathering, or event that does not comply with COVID-19 regulations will be disbanded
