Slipknot’s newest member, known as ‘Samples’, has spoken for the first time in a recent interview conducted by the band for video game Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. The new member, identifiable by the black cracks over his mask and zipped-shut mouth, replaced Craig Jones in June last year but has yet to have his confirmed identity revealed by the band.
In the promotional interview, Samples discusses the ‘obvious darkness’ that surrounds Slipknot’s music, emphasising his belief that the band create a space where individuals can adopt a different persona through their performance. He states: “I think it just reflects a great opportunity to be able to release the beast, and it’s a great experience… I feel like it’s an amplified version of me, but perhaps if I was to step out and look at myself, I may notice a different persona.”
Slipknot began teasing the new member last year, with fans creating various theories about who was behind the mask. Popular theories suggested that the new member could be former Korn and Evanescence keyboardist Zac Baird or nu-metal musician Nathan Church, who is famous for his work with Downthesun. However, it has since been confirmed that the band’s new drummer is Eloy Casagrande, formerly of Sepultura.
Samples, who has been given various nicknames such as ‘Greg Bones,’ ‘The Gimp,’ and ‘Leatherface,’ among others, has had his name listed as Samples/Media in Slipknot’s promotional material.
