On the anniversary of the Nottingham attacks, the families and friends of Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar retraced the same route their loved ones took before being fatally stabbed by Valdo Calocane on 13 June 2023. Mourners laid flowers at the scene of the crime and also took part in a ceremony at the University of Nottingham, where both of the students were enrolled. Ian Coates, a school caretaker, was also killed by Calocane in a separate attack. Huntingdon Academy, where Coates had worked for seven years, held an exhibition in his honour, where pupils wore red to symbolise love and kindness, which were values that Coates had held dear.
Calocane was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after admitting manslaughter on diminished responsibility grounds, sparking criticism from the victims’ families. David Webber, Barnaby Webber’s father, revealed that the family of the killer had sent them a letter, but they had no intention of reading it. “He’s a monster. There’s nothing they can say that’s going to make me feel any different”, Webber said.
The Court of Appeal ruled in May that Calocane’s sentence was not unduly lenient, but the families of the victims have vowed to continue their fight for justice. Thursday was about reflecting on their loved ones they had lost, they said. They will continue fighting for justice while also remembering their loved ones
