An exhibition by world-renowned British-Indian sculptor, Anish Kapoor, will be held at Liverpool Cathedral in 2024 to celebrate the cathedral’s 100th anniversary. This exhibition, titled “Monadic Singularity”, will showcase Kapoor’s profound artistic genius and marks his first solo show in a UK cathedral. In this spiritual context, Kapoor’s artworks aim to provide connection and inspire awe, rooted in the corporeal and evocative of the body. Kapoor’s unique sculptural language has developed over four decades and works featuring in this exhibition span the past 25 years.
The cathedral’s Director of Enterprise, Paul Smith, expressed how the cultural programming at Liverpool Cathedral has been expanding over the past 5-6 years and the exhibition is a way of taking the program up a notch or two, bringing one of the world’s most significant contemporary artists to the Cathedral. This exhibition is made possible by generous support from Culture Liverpool, Liverpool BID Company, and other partners such as Lisson Gallery, Boodles, and the Granada Foundation.
“Monadic Singularity” will offer the opportunity for audiences to experience a selection of Kapoor’s architectural works never before seen in the UK, such as “Sectional Body Preparing for Monadic Singularity” (2015), which highlights Kapoor’s use of materials and manipulation of perception. In an era of digital distractions, Kapoor’s artworks aim to encourage audiences to pause, reflect, and connect with deeper spiritual dimensions.
