An American woman, Anne Sacoolas, has issued an apology for her “tragic mistake” that led to the death of Harry Dunn, according to an inquest hearing. The 19-year-old was struck and killed by a car driven by Sacoolas outside the US airbase RAF Croughton in Northamptonshire in August 2019. Sacoolas left the country soon after the incident, claiming diplomatic immunity to prosecution.
Two statements from Sacoolas were presented at Northampton Coroners’ Court, one from her lawyers in 2020 and the other from a police interview two months after the fatal crash. In the latter statement, Sacoolas insisted that she was a “safe driver” and that she drove on the “American side of the road”. She declined an invitation to speak at the inquest.
In a statement from her lawyers, Sacoolas admitted to driving on the wrong side of the road for 20 seconds before hitting Dunn. She also said that she had not received any training in driving on UK roads. In her most recent statement, Sacoolas said she was “deeply sorry” for causing the accident and that she would “live with” the tragedy every day of her life.
Responding to Sacoolas’ statements, Dunn’s family spokesperson Radd Seiger asked why Sacoolas was not present in court to answer questions. The inquest is set to continue until Thursday, with further evidence from witnesses due to be presented
