An inquest has heard that Anna Beaumont, a 13-year-old girl from St Fagans, Cardiff, died by drowning while on holiday with her family in Florida. The incident took place at Discovery Cove theme park on 28 May. Anna’s father heard a lifeguard whistle, at which point he saw that Anna was in trouble. Lifeguards at the scene attempted to revive her and she was taken to Arnold Palmer hospital in Orlando. Despite efforts by doctors to save her, she died on May 31, 2018 at 17:22.
A post-mortem examination at Arnold Palmer hospital determined drowning as the cause of death followed by seizure disorder. Area Coroner Patricia Morgan has opened a formal investigation into Anna’s death as she has “reason to believe the death was unnatural”. She said the investigation will focus on Anna’s medical history and the circumstances that led to her passing. Further information will be obtained from Florida before the inquest can continue.
Anna’s family described her as “a beautiful soul” and the tragedy is being felt by classmates at Radyr Comprehensive School where Anna was a pupil. Her death is being mourned by loved ones, but the investigation is set to determine whether there were any factors contributing to her drowning that would prevent others from facing the same fate. Discovery Cove theme park has not yet made a statement on the incident
