Strictly's Amy Dowden to tell cancer story in BBC documentary

Strictly Come Dancing professional Amy Dowden has decided to share her experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer in a new documentary, which will be aired on BBC One later this summer. Amy was only 32-years-old when she discovered a lump in her breast one day before leaving for her honeymoon in April 2023. The documentary, which is currently titled Amy Dowden: Fight of My Life, will be shown before she returns to Strictly following her hiatus from the show due to her illness.

Amy was initially hesitant about allowing cameras to follow her journey; however, she agreed to it six days after her diagnosis. The film documents her experience of being diagnosed with stage three breast cancer, which led her to undergo a mastectomy, chemotherapy, and fertility treatment. In July 2023, Amy was informed that the tumors had spread, and she had another type of cancer.

The documentary follows Amy’s experience over 15 months, offering a candid look at her diagnosis and treatment and the impact it had on her life. Amy has stated that she hopes that sharing her story will inspire others to check themselves, irrespective of their age. In February, a health check confirmed that there was no evidence of the disease. Amy’s story is a reminder that anyone can be affected by breast cancer, and individuals should always complete a breast self-examination.

While Amy was unable to compete in the last year’s Strictly, she wasn’t absent from the series’ final dance. On Monday, the BBC confirmed that Amy will feature in this year’s professional line-up, making it her fifth year in a row working on the popular BBC show.

In 2020, Amy featured in a documentary, which focused on her experience of living with Crohn’s disease. Her willingness to share her experiences will undoubtedly help others who are dealing with similar health scares and ensure that we all take breast cancer seriously. The documentary follows a list of symptoms of breast cancer in women, which appears towards the end of the article
