The highly acclaimed prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, returns to HBO this week, much to the excitement of fans worldwide. The first season of the show, which starred notable actors such as Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Rhys Ifans, won the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series Drama in a four-star review by NME. The publication stated that it was a relief to see a prequel series that had a sound understanding of what it was doing and was worth watching for both fans and non-fans alike.
The second season releases this month, and the trailer for it was shared last month, building tension for the ensuing civil war between the Targaryens, known as the Dance of the Dragons. Rhaenyra Targaryen and Aegon II will but heads for the Iron Throne, igniting a war that will pit The Blacks, lead by Rhaenyra and Daemon, against The Greens, lead by Aegon. The trailer shows glimpses of the bloody and fiery war to come, coupled with a trip to The Wall.
The series is renewed for a second season five days after the first season premiered in August 2022. The show is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood and is set around 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones. Critics have praised the violent and stunning second season of House of the Dragon, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In the US, the first episode of the second season will air at 9 pm on June 16 on HBO, while viewers in the UK will have to wait until 1 am on Sky Atlantic. Episodes will air weekly on Sundays, starting June 16th. The season will comprise eight episodes in total.
NME also added that House of the Dragon feels as though it is walking on solid ground, with bubbling rivalries, jostling for power, and eruptions of violence coming together to create a rich stew that will keep both fans and neutrals alike glued to their screens
