It seems Russell Crowe might be having some mixed feelings about the upcoming release of Gladiator 2. The actor recently spoke about the long-awaited sequel, saying that he is “slightly uncomfortable” with the fact that it’s being made. Crowe went on to acknowledge that he has no say in what will be done with his character since he dies in the original film. However, he did express concerns over the moral journey of Maximus Decimus Meridius, stating that he’s heard things that don’t align with the character’s beliefs.
Crowe mentioned that there’s a “tinge of melancholy” and “jealousy” in him, reflecting back on when he made the first installment in 2000. He recalls the doors it opened for him, the opportunities that presented themselves, and even the fact that he had tendons when he was younger.
The sequel, which is set to release on November 22 globally, stars Paul Mescal as the lead and will focus on Lucius, the son of Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla from the first film. Nielsen is set to reprise her role in the film alongside new cast members Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, and Stranger Things actor Joseph Quinn.
Mescal recently voiced his own concerns about the fame that might come with the release of the next chapter in the story. The Irish actor admitted to being “profoundly depressed” if the film causes his life to change too much. However, he remains optimistic and is looking forward to seeing what the future holds.
Crowe won’t be returning for Gladiator 2, but his thoughts on the project are still significant. Fans of the original can only hope that the story remains loyal to the heart of the first film and that it finds success with a new generation of viewers
