Charli XCX has recently revealed that her latest single ‘Talk Talk’ was inspired by a moment at the 2020 NME Awards where she was nominated for Best Solo Act In The World, Best British Solo Act, and Best Collaboration. The 28-year-old singer had been texting her fiancé at the time, 1975 drummer George Daniel, while they were sat at different tables at the event. However, they kept glancing over each other and then looking away, which inspired the lyrics to the new track. Charli’s TikTok account recently posted a video where she explained how the situation unfolded, saying: “We were both looking over at each other – it was very like, one of us would look and the other one would look away, and then just vice versa.”
During the awards ceremony, Charli XCX also presented Robyn with the Songwriter Of The Decade Award, alongside Christine And The Queens. The 1975 were also big winners on the night, picking up the Band Of The Decade Award, as well as Best British Band, and the NME Innovation Award. They also closed the show with a live performance. Charli and George first started working with each other back in 2021 on the track ‘Spinning’. They confirmed their romance in 2022 on social media and then announced their engagement in late 2023.
In June 2021, Charli XCX released her sixth studio album ‘Brat’, and later shared the deluxe edition, which included three additional tracks. The album contains ‘Talk Talk’, and showcases Charli’s club-hedonism style with “percolating beats, brash synths, and left-field production” according to NME’s four-star review.
Lorde is among the many fans who have praised Charli XCX’s latest project, taking to social media to hail ‘Brat’. The New Zealand singer-songwriter wrote on her Twitter account: “The only album I’ve ever presaved is out today. Charli just cooked this one different. So much grit, grace & skin in the game.
