A funfair ride at the Lambeth Country Show in south London malfunctioned on Saturday, injuring four people, two of whom sustained potentially life-threatening injuries. The injured were taken to major trauma centres. A man in his 50s and an 11-year-old girl were also injured but had since been discharged from hospital. One of the fairground rides was covered in tarpaulin on the following day; however, it was not clear which ride malfunctioned. Lambeth Council has closed all funfair rides at the show and is conducting investigations to determine the cause of the malfunction, and additional safety checks are being carried out on all rides and attractions at the show. The Health and Safety Executive is also investigating the incident.
On the first day of the free event, a woman in her 40s sustained life-threatening injuries and another man of the same age was injured as the funfair ride malfunctioned. After the incident, the emergency services closed the funfair. Visitors to the fairground on Sunday were informed through signs that “apologies for any inconvenience, this ride will not open today”. Many visitors of all ages were seen reading the signs and seeking information from a fairground worker who informed them that all rides were shut.
Brockwell Park, situated near Brixton, is a popular green space, and the show is one of the biggest free family festivals in the UK according to its website. Lambeth Council expressed its commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. The council spokesperson also conveyed their thoughts to the four injured. However, the four people injured had been rushed to major trauma centres. All fairground rides were cordoned off and remained shut on Sunday.
The committee is determined to determine the cause of the malfunction. The anniversary of the Lambeth Country show coincided with this unfortunate incident. The investigation results are awaited
