During their recent show in Houston, Vampire Weekend took requests from the crowd and attempted to cover songs by Oasis and Phoenix, among others. In footage captured of the performance, the band can be seen tackling “1901” by Phoenix and a rendition of “Wonderwall” by Oasis. They also took on “Don’t Dream It’s Over” by Crowded House. Although the impromptu covers were somewhat incomplete, the band and audience can be seen enjoying the moment.
The New York outfit was in the city to kick off their North American tour in support of their new album, “Only God Was Above Us.” During their encore, they reportedly took requests for any well-known song, regardless of whether they had played it before.
Inspiration for the Phoenix request may have come from the group’s recent collaboration with Vampire Weekend. The gig included both bands performing “Tonight,” a song from Phoenix’s latest album “Alpha Zulu.”
Vampire Weekend also recently performed “Gen-X Cops” and “Capricorn” while appearing as the musical guests on “Saturday Night Live.” The band is set to embark on their 2024 UK and Ireland tour later this year.
