Mercury prize-nominated singer and songwriter Nadine Shah has explained her decision not to perform at Glastonbury in 2024 due to financial reasons. Shah announced on her official Twitter account that she had declined an offer due to low pay and a lack of a televised stage, writing: “It’s too expensive a hit for me to take otherwise”. While Glastonbury is renowned for being one of the world’s most recognisable festivals, it is also known for paying artists less than other major events because the organisers make large charitable donations.
Shah has previously been vocal about the difficulties faced by smaller artists, including her criticisms of streaming services which line the pockets of “superstars and super record labels” while leaving smaller acts more reliant on income from live performances. The coronavirus pandemic
