Positive News has launched a new podcast series that opens with six episodes exploring mental health solutions. The series, hosted by medical doctor Radha Modgil and journalist Seyi Rhodes, features interviews with people from around the world focusing on community-based and low-cost initiatives. The first episode profiles hairdressers in Ivory Coast who are becoming mental health ambassadors and providing support to clients. Other episodes showcase a range of interventions, including a training programme for Peruvian neurodivergent people, climate cafes for Africans suffering from eco-anxieties and a therapy programme for women in South Africa who have experienced gender-based violence.
The podcast builds on Positive News’s recently published Developing Mental Wealth series, which highlighted innovative mental health projects from around the globe. Positive News CEO Sean Wood said: “The Positive News Podcast brings an exciting new dimension to our uplifting journalism, helping us to reach more people with the good news that matters.” The podcast launch also coincides with rising levels of news avoidance, with research by the Reuters Institute showing that 41% of people in the UK actively try to avoid news.
Funding for the series was awarded to Positive News by the European Journalism Centre through the Solutions Journalism Accelerator, supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
