Here’s how many episodes will be in ‘The Last Of Us’ season two

HBO’s showrunner and director for The Last Of Us, Craig Mazin, has revealed that season two of the show will consist of seven episodes, compared to season one’s nine episodes. Despite the shorter episode count, the show won’t have its story trimmed in any way, according to Mazin. Season two of The Last Of Us will tell only a portion of the video game The Last Of Us Part II, which it is based upon, unlike season one, which covered the entirety of the first video game.

Mazin shared that the story material for part two of the game is larger than the material in the first game, so the producers needed to figure out how to tell that story across seasons. There will be natural breakpoints with two more seasons planned to finale the Last Of Us Part II storyline. Mazin, however, can’t confirm future seasons yet. “As long as people keep watching and we can keep making more television, Season 3 will be significantly larger. And indeed, the story may require Season 4,” said Mazin.

Season two of The Last Of Us will bring back Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel Miller and Ellie, respectively. Isabela Merced, young Mazino, Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, and Catherine O’Hara, who is playing an undisclosed role, will join the series as new cast mates for season two.

The shorter season two episode count will feature more comprehensive episodes, Mazin explained. While season one broke down the first game’s storyline, season two is breaking down a game with an extensive storyline. “The national breakpoint felt like it came after seven episodes,” said Mazin. He believes that season three will significantly expand over season two because of the game’s extensive storyline
