The main antagonist of Amazon Prime Video’s “The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power” will take on a new identity in the show’s second season. Fans will be thrilled to learn that the villain Sauron, played by Charlie Vickers, will transform into Annatar, a “blond-locked elf.” According to official messaging from Prime Video, Sauron still has 16 more rings to usher into being, and this season, Annatar will become besties with Celebrimbor.

Executive producer Lindsey Weber recently offered some insights into the show’s second season. “The relationship between those two characters–and those two actors Charlie Vickers and Charles Edwards–is something we’re so proud of,” she stated. “Season two of ‘The Rings Of Power’ wrapped last year during the SAG-AFTRA actors’ and WGA writers’ strike. It was reported in May of last year that season two had 19 days left of filming when the writers’ strike took effect.”

Sauron wants to control all of Middle-earth, and he knows he needs rings to achieve his goal. He needs the greatest of elven smiths to craft those rings, and that’s where Annatar comes in. According to Weber, the story of their relationship is at the heart of what they’re doing in season two. Fans can expect an incredible performance from both Charlie Vickers and Charles Edwards.

While the next run of episodes is expected to stream in 2024, there is no confirmed release date as yet. However, it is worth the wait, considering the four-star review the first season received from NME. In the review, the series was commended for its “grand elf lords, biblical storytelling, and cinematic scope” while still maintaining “the wholesome heart that made the films feel so warm and cozy.
