In the new miniseries Eric, actor Benedict Cumberbatch plays Vincent Anderson, a puppeteer who becomes unhinged after his son Edgar goes missing in 1980s New York. The Netflix psychological thriller created by Abi Morgan offers viewers a peek into Vincent’s spiralling behaviour and how he copes with the tragedy.
Detective Michael Ledroit (McKinley Belcher III) is investigating Edgar’s disappearance, which triggers Vincent’s substance abuse and alcoholism. As Vincent looks for his son, he grapples with his obnoxious subconscious, Eric – a furry puppet he wants to make a reality to help find Edgar.
The show’s other cast members include Ivan Morris Howe, Gaby Hoffmann, Roberta Colindrez, Jeff Hephner, Mark Gillis, and Dan Fogler. In the final episode, Vincent confronts and battles with Eric, giving him the moment of clarity he needs to find his son and overcome his personal problems.
In a recent interview with Variety, Cumberbatch shared his thoughts on Vincent’s story ending, saying, “He’s gone through this dark night of the soul to reach a quantum of solace, if you will. I think it is a beginning. It is the beginning of hope.” Abi Morgan, the show’s creator, also commented on Vincent’s redemption and how his privilege allowed him to navigate his way to rehabilitation.
Eric is now streaming on Netflix and promises to be an intense, thought-provoking journey into the depths of the human psyche
