Meta, the company that owns Instagram, has been accused of failing to provide data that could assist the investigation into the death of 16-year-old Murray Dowey. Dowey took his own life last December after being tricked by a sextortion gang on Instagram into sending compromising pictures. He was the victim of criminals posing as a girl. Despite requests from the police in Scotland and a court order, Meta has not yet provided the information from Dowey’s account. His mother, Ros Dowey, accused the company of “hindering the investigation” and not doing enough to protect children from such exploitation.
Mrs Dowey appealed directly to the president of global affairs at Meta, Sir Nick Clegg, to “sort this out”. She also accused the company of “putting the lives of other children at risk” by withholding vital data.
